DAB Acting Governor Meets with UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan

October 24, 2023 - Mr. Hedayatullah Badri, Acting Governor of Da Afghanistan Bank met with Roza Otunbayeva, United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative (SGSR) for Afghanistan and accompanying delegation.

In this meeting, comprehensive insights were provided on the joint cooperation for Islamic Microfinance Institutions development in Afghanistan and several other related issues.

Mr. Hedayatullah Badri, Acting Governor of Da Afghanistan Bank said that microfinance sector plays an important role in the country’s economy, with lessons learnt from the regional countries have proven that the people of the country, who want to start small businesses, can easily get Islamic finances from such institutions. Also, it can reduce unemployment rate at the country level and provide business opportunities for the people. Mr. Badri further added that DAB has created a regulatory framework based on which we will soon issue operating licenses, considering the importance of this sector. At the same time, DAB considers to coordinate the efforts for utilizing the experiences of regional countries.

Afterward, Mr. Badri stated that DAB appreciates the efforts of the United Nations in this regard and is ready to take immediate actions for the growth of this sector together.

It is worth mentioning that DAB never withhold any efforts in this regard and plans to hold a public awareness conference soon for the improvement of this sector with other relevant institutions at the country level.

Ms. Roza Otunbayeva, Secretary General’s Special Representative (SGSR) for Afghanistan, said that the United Nations has initiated to coordinate with other relevant entities to support this sector and has received assurance of cooperation from them. She further expressed that the United Nations is all set to work on developing this sector in accordance with DAB vision and assured that the conference will be held soon.
